Many people believe that a hacker is someone who breaks into computer security without permission and does rogue things when they get there (e.g. steal money, install viruses, steal information, etc.). But what if I told you that was not true? What if I told you that a hacker was much different from that? I’m about to so keep reading, you may learn something.

The term, “hacker” dates back to the early ’60′s in the AI Lab at MIT. A hacker is someone who is an expert at using a particular program, and enjoys playful cleverness. For example, a WordPress hacker would be someone who knows everything there is to know about it, understands the way it works internally, can write plugins (very well) for it, and would probably enjoy simply playing with it.

Hackers do not break into computer security (they don’t even like to). That is what crackers do. Many crackers my call themselves hackers but they are not. Real hackers know that the term “hacker” is usually bestowed by others not by one’s self.

According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, the second meaning of “hacker” is, “An expert at using a computer”. That means the real hackers. Unfortunately, the third meaning, means “a cracker”. But the dictionary eventually adopts words that words that everyone uses, so that means, if a word is misused long enough, it be put in.

So how did people begin misusing the word?

What happened was, originally, cracker’s did not have a name. So when newspapers wanted to report about a security being broken, they used the word “hacker” (because the word “hack” usually means, “to cause damage”, although the term came about from hackers’ playful nature, not really having anything to do with actual damage). The newspapers did know better, they just didn’t care. At that time, most people did not even know about computers, so the just followed what the news said. Hackers then coined the term, “cracker” as a way to defend against people misusing there name.

So to clarify some words, you don’t hack someones computer, you crack it.

If you don’t believe me, I will now begrudgingly call you stupid, close-minded and shallow-minded (and I can tell you go to public school). If you do believe me, and want to become a hacker check out this great howto.

For example, let’s say I wrote a program which replaces every five characters in a program with an “~” and I patented it. If someone came up with the same idea without even knowing about my program. He would still get in trouble for patent infringement.

Don’t you find that dumb? It could be much worse than that. Microsoft ran into to issues releasing software in South Korea. And yet they still make tons of them themselves. They’ve been on the bad end of it and they still don’t see.

Software patents are bad. Don’t make them, and don’t try to support people who do, either.

P.S. I’d like to thank Otto for getting it through my head that software patents really are bad.

I was on the computer one day and a stumbled upon programming for kids language called SiMPLE.

I checked them out a bit and found that it was supposed to be an easy language that is aimed toward beginners. It stand for SImple Modular Programming and Environments. I tried it a out a bit and found out that I didn’t like it that much.

Of course, I have to do research on everything, so I looked it up on Wikipedia. Turns out, they guys who invented tried to create language that was easy to use because they thought languages like C++ were too hard for beginners.

Which I don’t get. Everyone says that about C++. I started learning C++ just a few months ago and it’s not actually that hard. It’s quite easy to understand and quite easy to work with. I don’t mean to be conceited, but maybe I’m just different . I’ve always been interested in computers/programming since I was little, but I’ve only started to get into real development and programming recently.

I don’t mean to tell you not to use SiMPLE, but it’s more a of a hobby language than a hardcore development system. If you really want to be a professional programmer would recommend learning C/C++, or starting out with any other C-based language and then learning C++ itself (and paying attention in math class ).

If you want to learn C++ go to learncpp.com. It’s a WordPress site .

Darwin (in case you didn’t know) is kernel of Mac OS X, IOS and other Apple operating systems. It’s open source. I thought that was weird when I found out because Apple isn’t an open source company. It uses code from BSD systems and most open source licenses require derivatives to be published under the same license as the original work. As you probably know, BSD systems use the BSD license.

Mac OS X actually has several open source components (unlike Windows) you can get the source for stuff at http://opensource.apple.com. It is also the world’s best-selling UNIX-like system. I don’t know if it meets the FSF’s definition of “Free Software”.

I don’t no that much about Mac OS X. I’ve only spent about 20 minutes of my entire life in front of a Mac and most of that time was spent playing with Garage Band. All I know is UNIX is awesome and therefore, Mac OS X must be.

The Darwin logo looks like the BSD daemon except it’s a platypus. It’s name is Hexley.
